Deciding to move into a senior living home is a big decision, so finding the right community and home can be challenging. So it’s better to be prepared. There are many things to take into consideration when choosing the right senior home, so here’s what you should keep in mind as you compare and contrast all the available options.
1. Identify what you need
The first thing you need to consider is why you need to move into a senior living home. Is it because you feel tired and can’t take care of yourself and your home anymore? Do you feel lonely and want company? Is your loved one sick? Are you worried about their safety?
There might be several reasons behind your decision, but it’s important to have them clear so you understand what each senior living home has to offer.
2. Compare them
There are several types of senior living homes so it’s important to pick the right one, specific to your needs.
Independent living communities cater to seniors who do not require much daily assistance but want to stay active and have a social life. Here’s what they offer:
- Accommodation
- A worry-free lifestyle with restaurant-style dining, housekeeping, laundry services, and transportation
- An active social calendar
- A range of classes, clubs, and outings
- Other facilities like a pool, fitness center, etc.
Assisted living communities offer housing, onsite care, and assistance with daily activities while providing independence. You can typically expect:
- Assistance with activities such as bathing, dressing, and medication
- Onsite medical care as needed
- 24-hour supervision
- Homelike setting with services such as housekeeping and transportation,
- Daily social activities
- Other facilities like a pool, fitness center, etc.
Memory care communities specifically support those with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. They usually offer:
- Staff specially trained in Alzheimer’s and dementia care
- 24-hour support
- A secure, easy-to-navigate accommodation
- Therapy, structured activities, and programs that encourage purpose and provide social opportunities

Skilled nursing communities are ideal for those with chronic health conditions or incontinence, who require intravenous medications, and/or who are recovering from surgery or hospitalization. They usually offer:
- Comfortable private or semi-private rooms
- Round-the-clock, supervised care and assistance with daily activities
- Wellness programs
- Social opportunities and activities
- Housekeeping, laundry services, three daily meals, onsite beauty salon, and transportation
3. Create a checklist
Make a list of what’s most important to you. It will help you keep track of what’s important to you and avoid being overwhelmed by all the options you might have.
Here are a few suggestions you should consider:
- Non-negotiables for you/ your loved one
- Location preferences
- Lifestyle preferences
- Nice-to-have features, amenities, and/or services
- Budget
4. Check the lifestyle and the culture
After considering which type of facility is right for you or your loved one, you should also take into account the sense of community the place offers. Do they offer the right social activities, food, and services for your needs?
Here are a few questions you should keep in mind:
- What types of activities are offered?
- Are worship services offered and how often?
- Are there opportunities to go out into the local community for shopping and entertainment?
- Are pets welcome?
- Are meals healthy and inviting?
- Are visits from family and friends welcomed?
5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions
Since we mentioned some questions you should keep in mind, you should also make sure you ask all the questions you might have until you find the right senior living home for you or your loved one.
Here are some more suggestions for you:
- What security/safety features are offered?
- What types of accommodations are offered?
- Can residents personalize their space?
- What training and qualifications do associates have?
- Are the associates friendly and welcoming?
- How has communication been so far?
- What is the price?
- What’s included in the price? What services are add-ons?
- What are the payment options?
If you have the opportunity, make sure to talk to the residents. They are your best source of information since they live there. If that is not an option, make sure to pay attention to how the staff and the residents interact.
6. Discuss it with the family
Whether you’re considering senior living for yourself or your loved one, it’s essential to include other family members in this process. Of course, you’ll have different opinions and perspectives, but the truth is that the transition will be easier on the entire family if you all discuss it beforehand.
7. Take a tour
Set up appointments and take tours of the senior living homes you are considering for yourself or your loved ones.
Try to arrange appointments for early in the day while you are fresh and ask a friend or family member to join you. Pay attention to details such as:
- Is the facility clean everywhere you look?
- Are staff and residents smiling and welcoming?
- Are living space options adequate?
- Are engaging activities taking place?
Take notes, ask questions and get any brochures that might help you make the best and most important decision before moving in.
